Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) wants to repeal the 17th Amendment to the constitution and take away your right to vote for your senators.
Originally, state legislatures choose the senators without input from the public. Since only propertied people could vote any way, the state legislators invariably picked a wealthy landowner from amongst themselves. In setting up the senate, the Founding Fathers wrote about it as a tool to protect land owners and little else. As James Madison wrote, “Our government ought to secure the permanent interests of the country against innovation. They ought to be so constituted as to protect the minority of the opulent against the majority.”
Senator Cruz wants to return to the good old days before all these pesky amendments were added. What other amendments are on his hit list; 13, 14, 15, 19, 23, 24, 26, and 27 perhaps? Who can say.
If he really wants to be president, run on repealing the 16th. (Just kidding. We need it to run the country.)
